Steve Irwin, never a real "hunter"

May "The Crocodile Hunter" of Australia rest in peace and may his spirit live on in all of us who love animals. Steve Irwin's show was one of the rare ones i used to watch on occasion when i watched TV.

He was a caring, compassionate, funny, energetic activist, and as far as i was always able to tell, a true friend to animals.

From Wikipedia entry:

Irwin was as enthusiastic about his family as he was about his work. He once described his daughter Bindi as "the reason he was put on the Earth." His wife Terri once said, "The only thing that could ever keep him away from the animals he loves are the people he loves even more."

My heart hurts knowing a caring individual who did so much to share his knowledge of and passion for animals with the public has passed away from this Earthly realm. I am sad today.

Hey Kleo! Happy Labour Day. I saw this announcement when I logged onto the internet today. What a shocker! At least he died doing what he loved to do. That's more than most of us can hope for. (I'd like to die in a Grand Cru chateau in Bordeaux with the luscious drops of a spectacular premieur wine still on my lips OR in the arms of Bryan Adams while he's declaring his undying love for me - but I think I have a better chance of the France gig).

Hi Kleo,
I was also sad and surprised by the news of Steve Irwin. I loved his extreme personality and seeing him with the animals and his family. He did SO much to educate and help animals, and that will live on, of course. He could have stayed home and stayed safe and lived longer, but that was not his choice or style. He was definitely happy, and he made us all happy too. *hugs*

I'm sad too. But, to echo everyone else, at least he lived his life doing what he loved to do.

I couldn't believe it when I heard the news today. He was a very vibrant personality and I know that he was a wildlife conservationist, but I must say, I lost a lot of respect for him when I saw him feeding beer to gorillas and huge chocolate sandwiches to rhinos. I just don't think those are appropriate foods for those animals and instead of teaching the public to respect them and their natural habitats and lifestyles, he was sending out a message that it's ok to harm animals for a laugh.

Here in Australia we have heard nothing else for the last two days. Yes it is a tragedy for any life to end, especially the life of someone who did so much for animals. I am sad, though, that so few people have made any note of the fact that Steve had a wife and two children under 6 who will now grow up without a father. It is them I am thinking of now.

This was on my mind all day yesterday!

:(

The mango sauce for the Kashi was great! :)

Polenta...not sure yet...it's premade...in the past I have ate it with kale and sun dried tomatoes or marinara sauce. Still looking for suggestions. I guess there is a lasagna you can do with it instead of noodles...might have to research that one!

HUGS!

I was shocked and sad to hear about this too. I'm sure he was a very compassionate person towards animals and people alike. His poor family--I can't imagine how shocked they must have been...

I heard about this on my drive in this morning. What a way to go, can't even imagine what that must have been like. I'd seen his show in passing, but couldn't really say I was a fan. Big personality on that bloke, that's for sure! Very sad about his wife and kids.

Hi kleo, I saw this in the paper yesterday. Steve Irwin was an incredibly passionate and inspirational man. He will be missed.

I'm so shocked too. The man made his career by putting his head into the mouths of croc and he dies this way! I heard one report saying that only 17 people in recorded history have ever died from sting ray attacks. What are the chances!

Really sad... If only so many of us would go and pursue our passion like he did.

Every time I read about how he died, I feel so sad. We used to spend hours watching the Crocodile Hunter on television. He used to freak me out around snakes, because I am snake phobic. Nevertheless he was a great man. He dedicated many hours to educating the public about animals and his charisma made animal lover's out of so many. There are videos of him pulling the stinger out of his chest, but I refuse to watch them. I think that capitalizing on somebodies death is a horrible thing.
